The technique of swaddling has been used for ages. Most nurses in the hospital immediately swaddle newborn babies. Swaddling mimics the womb and has many great benefits. Some of these benefits are helping infants sleep longer, reducing the risk of SIDS by allowing baby to stay on their back, and reducing spontaneous movements which cause babies to wake up.
After combing the internet for the best swaddle, I came across the Ollie Swaddle. What makes the Ollie Swaddle unique is the ability to customize it to your baby, the elasticity and the opening to allow for quick and easy diaper changes. The Ollie Swaddle is made of breathable, moisture wicking material that helps reduce overheating. The elasticity in the fabric of the Ollie Swaddle allows baby freedom of movement. This stimulates motor development and, when used properly, reduces the risk of hip dysplasia that is commonly seen with swaddling.
The Ollie Swaddle is made to grow with your baby. You can start swaddling your newborn from day one. When baby is old enough to roll over, you can still use your Ollie Swaddle! You simply leave one or both of baby’s arms out of the swaddle to allow baby the freedom to move and roll over.
The Ollie Swaddle is very easy to use. To swaddle Baby Sister I simply lay the Ollie Swaddle and placed her shoulders in the unique groved area at the top. Once Baby Sister was positioned correctly, I tucked both her arms down by her body and wrapped the Ollie Swaddle across her body. Next, I secured the left side of the Ollie Swaddle using the velcro. This velcro allows me to customize the tightness and fit of the Ollie Swaddle. Some babies will like to be swaddled tightly while others may enjoy a looser swaddle. Once I had secured the velcro, I then gathered the bottom of the Ollie Swaddle and pulled the fabric through the attached elastic loop. This elastic loop allows me to be able to change Baby Sister’s diaper in the middle of the night without undoing the entire Ollie Swaddle. This makes it super easy to change Baby Sister’s diaper without disturbing her.
Baby Sister is two weeks old in the following photos.
When Baby Sister is a little older and can roll over from her back to her stomach, it is time to transition from the full swaddle to a half swaddle. To do this I would simply allow Baby Sister’s arms to be free and out of the Ollie Swaddle. Since Baby Sister is too little for this, here is a video that will demonstrate this technique.
