Adventures In Tandem Nursing Take Two Part Three

Where has the time gone? It’s been about 6 months since I did a tandem nursing update. Baby Sister is a little over three years old now. Fingerly just turned a year old. While Fingerly is nursing, Baby Sister has weaned. She did this on her own a little after her third birthday.

I did snap a quick photo while she was nursing recently. I knew every time she nursed it might be the last time. It was bittersweet, her weaning. I am glad she was able to do it on her own time. She would ask for milk less and less. Because she was not nursing as much, she was forgetting how to properly use her mouth to get milk. The last few times she nursed she was sad because there was no milk in there. I told her there is milk, you are getting to be a big girl and are forgetting how to drink milk. That it is okay and we can snuggle instead of drinking milk. Sometimes thats all she needs, a snuggle. Nursing was her comfort, a way to recenter herself after she became upset or was hurt. Snuggling was the replacement for milk. Now if she is sad she tells me she needs a hug. I think this is the most important part of weaning, is giving the child something to replace breastfeeding. A hug and some time with Mama is all she needed.

I am sad to see our tandem nursing journey end, but I am happy to see my babies growing up. Who knows, I may have one more tandem nursing journey ahead of me. 🙂
